Chapter Thirteen
The town of Visoko is home to nearly fifty thousand people, and at one time was one of the most populated areas in all of Bosnia. The earliest settlers came to this area over four thousand years ago…. But of course, with the recently confirmed data that the pyramids buried beneath soil and trees for many thousands of years are in fact authentic, the first known settlers to the area might be closer to twenty-five thousand years ago.
In the present day, Visoko has become more of a suburb to Sarajevo. Boasting a surprising array of fine restaurants, Visoko also has several hotels of note. Fortunately, one of them—the Hotel Piramida Sunca—had a pair of adjoining vacant suites that offered splendid views of Visocica Hill, which for centuries was famous for a castle that overlooked the town below. Nowadays, however, the noted hill that dominates most pictures of Visoko is referred to as the “Pyramid of the Sun”.
Admittedly, the hotel could use an overhaul to its design and amenities, but the food in the lobby restaurant was good enough to bring us back to a better mental state. Roderick and I weren’t nearly as desperate for sleep as Cedric, Amy, Jeremy, and Beatrice, but we hoped to pinpoint my coin’s likely location in time to indulge in a nap before returning to the site that night.
“You should all catch up on your rest this morning and afternoon while William and I survey the surrounding hills,” Roderick advised. “Lord willing, we will find the likely radius for the coin and be back in time for dinner.”
He smiled while sipping on his coffee. I did the same, praying we could get started on our search within the hour. Presently just after 9:00 a.m. that Friday, Roderick and I hoped to discern which hill harbored the coin, and then return to that area when it would be much easier to detect my coin’s attendant blue glow. Not to mention, the tourists drawn by the growing popularity of the ‘Bosnian Pyramids’ should have retired from their explorations by dusk.
“I doubt that Ratibor will sense our presence and come back this way, don’t you?” Cedric asked Roderick and me. Amy and Jeremy flanked him as they sat across from Beatrice and us. “I’d like to come along.”
“Not this time, my friend,” I said. “Even without Ratibor’s presence to worry about, it’s best if I don’t have anyone other than Rod’s energy to distract me. Not even Beatrice.”
I patted her hand and offered her a loving smile. She regarded me in such a way that I knew she was disappointed not to be coming with Roderick and me—despite the redness in her eyes begging for sleep.
“What if you can’t pinpoint the coin’s location?” asked Amy. “Or, you find it and it’s impossible to reclaim? It might be best to catch Ratibor before he disappears for good, and come back afterward to look for your coin.”
To her credit, I could tell she wanted nothing to do with the fiend who had taken Alistair from her.
